PART 2 of 8 God hates… detests… haughty eyes

Second set of the multipart blog..
Review. God hates certain things as we do.. His reasons are totally different than ours and more appropriate too.

Proverbs 6:17 God hates Haughty eyes.. We first need to realize what haughty eyes are…
Webster says… haughty eyes are defined as snobbish, scornfully arrogant… so I can now add Webster to the list from the previous post.. more things to hate.

So, why would God dislike (hate) snobbish, scornfully arrogant eyes? Great question.. a better questions is:

Why do you dislike snobbish, scornfully arrogant eyes or people?

What jumps to mind… I really have never got along with people who were snobbish.. the ones who acted like they were better than anyone or everyone else. I think the dynamic changes for me since I have gotten older.. I no longer dislike them but I do feel for them.  I have learned in most cases it is an escape or hiding mechanism.. People feel the need to cover certain emotions or memories.

So, what did you come up with? What do you think of people who are snobbish?

Arrogance? I am not even going there we all know this one all to well. We live in a  world full of arrogant people, from sports, to extreme sports, to political figures to people in the store we shop in.

Why would God dislike (hate) the haughty eyes?
I was taught by my mom.. the true person lies within/ behind their eyes. You have to look into them to se the true person. When people don’t make eye contact we all get a bit uncomfortable.

Genesis 3 God warned Adam and Eve not to eat of the forbidden tree because your eyes would become open… open to seeing and know and living in a sinful world.

Exodus 13. it was to be a sign to us.. put a reminder between your eyes..  the eyes are a focal point to which we can be seen. that others can also see. It was a reminder of God delivering His people out of trouble.

Our eyes are the thing we used to see both good and bad.. our eyes are used as a witness to God. Our eyes often speak louder than words.

So maybe this whole haughty eyes things has some merit after all. We are all meant to be an example of Jesus in our world. I am glad God reminds me to check my eyes, check my look and check my motives in all that I do. I want my eyes to be a window into who I am and WHOSE I am.

There is a game we play with our kids.. mainly when we are trying to kill time.. it is I spy… I spy something …… and the idea is to find an object that the other people need to guess, or figure out what it is… the winner gets to be the spier.
I would like to challenge each of us to play I Spy..

I spy someone who is a strong growing example?
I spy someone who is in need of some support and care?
I spy someone who has no clue what the meaning of life is?
I spy someone who is excited to be alive?

Good luck with who you spy and how God can use them to help you find Him more uniquely this week.

PART 1 OF 8 Blog posts on the subject of Warning signs

hater

Proverbs..6 verse 16.. Begins with these simple words
“There are 6 things the Lord hates– no seven things..”(Jesus Centered Bible)

I know this is a very controversial one line of text to write. But before you jump off the handle and go crazy on me… think about a couple of things for a minute..

  1. We all have things we hate… for example.. terrorism, drunk driving, bullying and anything done to us or someone that makes for a painful history.. holocaust, a terrible tornado, etc.
  2. When we hear someone doesn’t like us, we quickly don’t like them.. We hate them.
  3. We hate accountability.
  4. We hate when others opinions or views don’t line up with yours..
  5. We hate rumors, well the ones about us, our kids, our spouse or our friends.
  6. We also hate being told we are wrong.

So for the creator of the world to say He hates somethings we shouldn’t react with crazy thoughts, or to just shut down and ignore or rule the topic out. We should take sometime to seek to learn from everyone.. even those who view things different than we do.. that doesn’t mean we just throw discernment into the wind and trust everything we hear.

I would encourage you the reader and myself to seek sometime to evaluate what we are being told or what we are hearing, reading and even watching.
I watched a clip from the new show Quantico the other day. He new FBI recruits where encouraged not to allow the evidence to sway you.. look at the whole, big picture. I am asking each of us to look at the big picture when referencing the Word of God and how He is communicating with us.

Do not allow yourself to be a hater… just to hate.

BEWARE….. we need to be aware

While reading Proverbs 4 a few weeks ago, God placed a theme of Beware on my heart. We jumped into it on a recent Sunday Night during our ministry night…
Set up… I handed out several topics to our junior and senior high students to think about and share on.

Play out…
Your time… How you spend your time is important.
Your media.. What you listen to and watch is important.
Your relationships.. Who you hang out with and date is important.
Your dress .. What you wear is important.
Your words.. What you say or don’t say is important.

Each student and leader came up and shared a simply paragraph on why it is important for people (especially Christians) to be conscious of the item they were presenting.

Your time.. We need to be cautious about how we spend our time. We only get so many hours in a day. Don’t waste them but also don’t run full open and burn out.
Your Media.. We need to be cautious about what we watch, play and listen to, what we take in our ears and eyes settles into our mind and heart and can change us.
Your Relationships .. We need to be cautious about who we date and hang out with. We are the ones who will be moving away from our Faith in Jesus not others. We need to maintain balance in our relationships
Your Dress.. We need to be cautious about what we wear, not just the girls either.. Our presentation is important. It tells people about us prior to them talking to us, getting to know us. We need to present ourselves in a modest not distracting way.
Your Words.. We need to be cautious about the words we say. People can be built up or easily broken down by our words and it can destroy any future words people will be willing to hear.

I was totally impressed with the words spoken on Sunday night and it made me think…
What can we change or beware of as people to make the world a better place?
Please join me in the journey of discovering a new way of using our witness to impact the church and the world.
